Fluorine can play an important role in drug design and development. Introduction of a fluorine substituent into a drug molecule can influence a wide range of properties, including pKa, potency, permeability, metabolic liability, and structural conformation. Given its potential effects, there has been a strong drive towards the development of new synthetic methodologies that enable the facile introduction of fluorine at a late stage in the synthesis.
